Our lives are filled with moments of creativity. We create art, we develop relationships, and we design our lives. The creative process is so intrinsic to who we are as people that finding artwork in therapy spaces is not uncommon.
The therapeutic process can be described as a journey of self-discovery, where clients discuss, examine, and reflect on their feelings, thoughts, and ideas. The process of self-discovery can frequently lead to unexpected outcomes and expose to us ideas or feelings we had thought we had forgotten, or in fact, ideas or feelings we had no idea we had. The creative process is similar in many ways. We find ourselves and discover new elements of ourselves, much like the creative process in writing music or the arts. In this sense, creativity is a form of self-discovery and healing. It's something that every person can do, regardless of their background or expertise—and it can be done alone or in a group setting.
