I think the goal of enlightenment is not to remove desire and suffering but to manage them.
I believe there are two kinds of suffering: the first is caused by a lack of resources, and our minds cause the second. The first kind of suffering—the kind that comes from being poor or hungry or sick—can be alleviated with money, food, and medicine. This kind of suffering is an external problem; we can solve it by giving people what they need. The second kind of suffering—the kind that comes from a broken heart or a broken spirit—is an internal problem that cannot be solved with money, food, or medicine. It can only be solved by understanding how our minds work and how we can change our minds to change our lives. As we all know, change can be challenging but if our suffering has not changed in, let's say, ten years, then it is time to take inventory and do something about it.
